Канатный мост Керрик-а-Рид (англ. Carrick-a-Rede, название можно перевести как "Камень на дорозге") на 30-метровой высоте ещё в XVII веке построили местные рыбаки, чтобы добираться до островка Керрик, вдоль которого мигрировал лосось. Как это часто происходит, потребительское отношение к природным ресурсам уничтожило тот сук, на котором восседало - рыбу выловили, промысел исчез. Впрочем, место облюбовала иная "золотая рыбка" мировой экономики - туристы. Для их удобства в 1970 году мост переделали, добавив перила и уменьшив зазоры между досками настила. В 2008 году провели очередной ремонт и теперь конструкция способна выдержать до 10 000 тонн. Не удивительно, ибо за год сюда наведывается до 250 тысяч туристов. Впрочем, не все возвращаются пешком через мост - те, кто находят это слишком утомительным, могут уплыть с островка Керрик на лодке.

I am confused by the phrase "now the structure is able to withstand up to 10 000 tons". This means that 1 meter of the bridge will bear the weight of 500-600 people (!) with a 10-fold margin of safety ! I have a brain explosion star
